This workshop explores the vital role of discomfort and struggle in all learning environments. We’ll examine how experiencing challenge is not only a natural part of daily life but also a crucial element of any Rite of Passage — shaping who we are becoming. By supporting children to engage with tasks that offer just enough challenge, we help them build resilience, adaptability, and the capacity to navigate life’s ever-changing conditions. Together, we’ll reflect on how these experiences lay the foundation for growth and self-discovery, fostering a deeper understanding of their importance in education and beyond.

This workshop explores how the Montessori concept of Big Work can be adapted for mainstream secondary classrooms to empower students and deepen their connection to ethics and philosophy. Participants will learn how students engaged in a self-managed project applying environmental ethics to a real-world problem, with the goal of creating meaningful impact beyond the classroom. Rather than simply proposing solutions, students were challenged to take action by engaging community leaders and implementing change within their local environment. This process not only gave students purpose but also highlighted the power of their own actions in shaping their community.

Our Montessori materials have been on a very interesting journey. It all started with the revolutionary approach to education developed by Maria Montessori, which we are taking forward today and place in the light of the new insights, recent scientific research and our today’s knowledge and experience. Some things will never change, simply because they are fundamental for a child’s development, but the evolution of the Montessori materials has not stopped since Dr. Montessori passed away in 1952. Together with many Montessori experts we are continuing and advancing her legacy.

For more than 19 years and with a lot of passion and dedication Chris has been working as a Global Brand Ambassador for world’s leading Montessori material manufacturer, Nienhuis Montessori. He is responsible for the global Montessori network and is leading the marketing and product development team. Next to this he has been representing Nienhuis at many international Montessori congresses. He has a degree in international marketing and is Montessori-trained at both 3 – 6 and 6 – 12 levels. He has observed Montessori education in many different countries and cultures, worked with many Montessori experts and gained a very broad perspective of Montessori education this way.

It’s no secret that Montessori tends to attract educators who are fiercely independent and who value their classroom autonomy. Montessorians are renowned for their ability to do what’s best for their students, with or without direction, no matter what resources they have at their disposal. The diversity available in Montessori educator preparation programs mirrors the self-direction and independence of Montessori educators…so why do we need another organisation telling us what to do? In this presentation Dr Pelton will look at the role accreditation plays today in the world of Montessori educator preparation programs. Why it gives graduates the ‘golden ticket’ and what role MACTE plays in making Montessori universally accepted in the wider educational landscape.

Dr. Rebecca Pelton is the President of the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE). MACTE serves as the international accreditor for Montessori educator preparation programs around the world. Rebecca has been working in accreditation for educator preparation and education for the past 45 years. Prior to her work with MACTE, she served as the Vice President for Membership for the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). Rebecca has degrees in K-12 music, special education, gifted education and earned her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Delaware. Her tenure with MACTE is based on commitment to supporting Montessori educator preparation and thereby improving the educational experience of Montessori students.

An ordinary teacher cannot be transformed into a Montessori teacher, but must be created anew, having rid herself of pedagogical prejudices.” (Maria Montessori, Education for a New World)

The Josy Ludwig “Quiet Achiever” Award

This reward recognises the unsung heroes of Montessori education: those who have dedicated their lives to shaping the future of our children. Imagine a simple yet heartfelt Montessori educator award that celebrates the tireless efforts of classroom teachers or support staff who have devoted themselves to the betterment of their students. These are the everyday educators who have not necessarily made ground-breaking innovations or achieved extraordinary feats, but have simply poured their hearts and souls into their work, helping children grow into the amazing adults they are meant to be. These are the educators who are loved by their community and cherished by their students and parents. Let us come together to honour them and show our gratitude for their selfless service. Let alumni students, parents, and administrative staff nominate these heroes and have their impact recognised and celebrated.

This award celebrates individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership and innovation in the Montessori education sector. This prestigious award honours professionals who have made significant contributions to advancing Montessori principles, fostering holistic child development, and promoting organisational excellence within Montessori schools and organisations. From visionary directors to innovative business leaders supporting Montessori education, this award recognises individuals who excel in strategic planning, resource management, and creating nurturing learning environments rooted in Montessori philosophy. By honouring their dedication, creativity, and impact, the Business and Administrator Award aims to inspire and empower Montessori leaders to continue driving positive change and shaping the future of Montessori education.
